Hokkaido to California for the ONLY Nonsuri Event Outside of Japan!
I went to Southern California to cover NA Nonsuri 2025, the signature event hosted by Moonlight Runners!
Over the last few years, they have earned a profound influence within the kaido racer community both here in North America and back in Japan, and this year’s gathering showed exactly why.
The atmosphere felt like a slice of old school Japanese car culture brought to North America, complete with wild silhouettes, exciting paint jobs, and the energy that comes from a community that builds from passion before anything else.
Moonlight Runners have carved out a unique place in this community by championing kaido racers and creating an environment that encourages creativity. Their builds and content have inspired a wave of new enthusiasts, and NA Nonsuri has become the yearly meeting point for anyone who appreciates this style. The 2025 event, held at Apple Valley Speedway, drew an impressive mix of dedicated builders, longtime supporters, and first-time spectators who sought to experience the culture firsthand.
Filming for Checkpoint gave me the chance to explore the paddock, talk with owners, and capture details that define this style. long-nose conversions, exaggerated lines, fully stripped interiors, and the unmistakable presence of cars that are built to stand out. Out on the skid pad, drivers showcased playful low-speed antics and synchronized movement that echoed the spirit of classic nonsuri gatherings in Japan.
What stood out most was the sense of community. Everyone was proud to share their work and excited to see others take creative risks. That level of enthusiasm is rare and makes NA Nonsuri feel less like an event and more like a celebration of a niche culture that has found a home far from its origins.
NA Nonsuri 2025 delivered a look into a world shaped by style, history, and passion, and it was a privilege to document it from the ground.
